The theatre at Townley Grammar School was packed to capacity on Saturday (3rd March) when ten young people, all finalists in the competition to become Bexley Young Musician of the Year 2018* performed. The musicians had just eight minutes each to impress the judges with their skills at singing or playing an instrument.

Entry was limited to musicians or singers resident in, or attending an educational establishment within the London Borough of Bexley, and aged under 19 years on 1st September 2018.

Instruments played included flute, trumpet, clarinet, violin, piano and saxophone.

The winner was 15 year old pianist Alexander Lukov a pupil at Bexley Grammar School where he is studying for his GCSE examinations. He has attained grade 8 for both piano and violin and also plays the guitar. At school he plays in the Symphony Orchestra, String Quartet and the Big Band. At Trinity Laban he plays in the Sinfonia and a piano trio. He gained third place in the annual Mozart competition in Italy and gained silver medals in the Blackheath, Beckenham and Bromley annual music competitions. He enjoys gymnastics and studying choreography. His ambition is to pursue a career in music.

After the presentation of the Bexley Young Musician of The Year cup by the Mayor of Bexley Cllr Peter Reader, Alexander, from plumstead said: “I was nervous and excited before the competition. It was really nice to be a part of it, and to hear all the other contestants perform. It really surprised me when I was announced as the winner, everyone else was so talented”.
Each of the finalists received a cheque for £100, a certificate and a photograph to commemorate the event.

Maurice Tripp, who has been MC for the event for a number of years said: “Alexander is a very talented musician and just looking at his list of musical pursuits, I am amazed that he finds time to fit it all in. We all wish him luck in his musical career”.
